My friend Eve and I recorded our session of The Apothecaire's Apprentice last night, and the final edits of the video are being made as I type by my wonderful mod, Deepsquirrel. I will be sharing this wacky session, with all its ups and downs and truly chaotic rolls, at 9pm CET/3pm ET on my Twitch channel! Please note that this is still a playtest of the game, and there will be some changes made to the mechanics that you see in the video based on our experience playing to improve the game! 🥰

In other Apothecaire's Apprentice news, on Friday at 8pm CET/2pm ET, I'll be on Hoard of Tales's Creator Talk chatting with my friend Markus about all things solo TTRPGs and specifically this wonderful game. It'll be about an hour long, so stop on by and join in the chat!

That's it from me today; hope to see you on Twitch tonight or on Friday! (Or even for Pokémon on Thursday if you're so inclined?)

Two weeks to go!
about 1 year ago – Thu, Nov 16, 2023 at 07:51:39 AM

Thank you all so much for your support! We've now unlocked the extra editing pass of the game, meaning I'll be able to hire an editor to go over the game and make sure those pesky spelling mistakes that slip through the cracks will be caught and check the flow of the game book.

Final Stretch Goals (Updated)!

We're getting near to the next planned stretch goal of the full PDF of 32 cocktails and mocktails inspired by the potions in the game! Given that, I've added two new stretch goals that I'd love to hit by the end if we can!

New stretch goals: €7k: custom endpapers; €12k: 52 NPCs art and descriptions pdf

At €7k, the books will get custom endpapers of potion bottle designs, and at €12k, I will write up descriptions for all 52 NPCs and commission NPC art for the PDF! The game is written so that the potential customers and Apothecaire herself are open to interpretation because no two people will come up with the same exact character and description. Think of this PDF as an expansion to the game for those who want it.

Project we love

Check out Demiverse Expanded, which was funded within 32 hours of launch!

Demiverse art showing many open doorways in a hilly night scene.

Everything was going more or less as it had for millions of millennia when suddenly the unthinkable happened. The multiverse, uh, kinda exploded. The fractured realities were sent hurtling (fifth-dimensionally) sometimes combining and reforming in a dizzying number of ways.

Once the dust settled, all that remained were demiplanes, strange fragments of reality the largest of which are only a few thousand square miles and the smallest of which is reported to be a five-foot dungeon tile, if you can believe it.

There's plenty to see and do on any one demiplane alone. And each would be completely isolated from the others if not for interplanar gates scattered among them. Those foolhardy enough to travel widely throughout the demiverse will find marvels and dangers in abundance, enough to rival your dreams and fuel your nightmares. One thing such intrepid people would never lack is adventure!

This campaign setting will contain up to 50 demiplanes that can be used as its own campaign setting or part of a broader multiverse. A woodland whose trees ascend forever. A mist-shrouded sylvan horrorscape. A religion springing up around a literal piece of heaven. An observatory whose windows open to multiple demiplanes. An interplanar train station. And dozens more!

That's everything from me for now, have a lovely weekend!

Over 100 backers! And a dice update.
about 1 year ago – Sat, Nov 11, 2023 at 06:44:22 AM

We hit 100 backers overnight last night, which is just so incredible! I know I've been saying this a lot, but thank you to you all for your support. But that's not all I have to talk about in this update: Myles from RuneFable poured the final sample dice this week and I have photos to share!

Don't they look stunning? I love how Myles took my potion bottle dice idea and just ran with it. Each die will be unique in its own right, as these are hand-poured dice, made to look as if they are pink, purple, and gold potions inside potion bottles. What do you think of the dice? Leave a comment to let me know!

Another stretch goal unlocked!

A deck of tarot cards on a rough hewn wooden table, surrounded by brown and gold fabrics and materials. The text reads, "The Apothecaire's Apprentice, fourth stretch goal unlocked: potion stickers by @GhostCandle"

That's not all, though: we also hit the potion sticker stretch goal! All physical orders will come with potion stickers from @GhostCandle.

The next three stretch goals are all digital/for all backers:

  • at €4k, the game will receive an extra editing pass,
  • at €5k, the potion mocktails and cocktails PDF will be expanded to include all 32 potions in the game,
  • and at €5.5k, I'll be writing a short story (in PDF) about my own character's experiences as the Apothecaire's apprentice and how she handles the work without the Apothecaire around to guide her.

With the campaign only on its 11th day, I'm confident that we will hit these goals, especially the extra editing pass since we're only €224 away! I also have plans for future stretch goals that I think you'll all be very excited about. 😉

Projects we love

There are a couple of projects I wanted to give a shout-out to in this update. The first one is just near and dear to my heart, being a potions-themed campaign! It's the "5e Alchemy: Brew Potions, Shape Worlds" where you can get digital or physical card decks for potions-making in D&D 5e. I got the digital pack personally and I'm interested to see how it works in 5e...even if I have to do so as the forever GM. 😅 This campaign is already over 400% funded and still going strong.

The other campaign I wanted to highlight is very different from The Apothecaire's Apprentice and is called "Deployment: The World War 2 TTRPG" — they have a very low goal of $700 and are already 62% of the way to reaching that amount! They have PDF and physical copies of the game as tiers, so be sure to check them out! Given that it's a war-themed game, just keep that in mind when reading the description on the Kickstarter page. If you're a war buff and want to bring more of big battles and tactics into your TTRPG sessions, this sounds like the perfect game for it.

That's everything from me for this update! I'll be updating the potion bottle dice listings shortly with the new photos. Happy Saturday!

Third stretch goal unlocked!
about 1 year ago – Tue, Nov 07, 2023 at 02:31:02 AM

Top view of a rough hewn apothecary bench with dried potion ingredients and potion bottles sitting on it. Text reads, "The Apothecaire's Apprentice. Third stretch goal unlocked: book quality upgrade."

The third stretch goal has been unlocked, meaning that the physical copies of the game will be printed on higher-quality paper! 🥳  Not only that, we're well on our way to the potion stickers stretch goal (at €3.5k) being unlocked as well.

I'm currently scheduling a two-player play-through of the game with my friend Eve (@_eve_me_alone_ on Instagram and @eve_me_alone_TikTok!) that will be streamed on my Twitch channel in the coming weeks. I'll post an announcement about it when we settle on a date. 😊

I also wanted to take the time to share a Kickstarter that I'm very excited about: Heroes of Bastion is currently crowdfunding season 2 of their Masks campaign and are currently 68% of the way to their funding goal of $15,000 with 15 days left in the Kickstarter campaign! They have some really fun tiers, including funky d6s and even naming an NPC in the campaign. Check out their Kickstarter here!

That's it from me for now! Thank you to everyone who has backed this TTRPG so far; it couldn't be done without your support!!

First and second stretch goals unlocked!
about 1 year ago – Fri, Nov 03, 2023 at 06:23:20 AM

Photo of a potions workbench covered with potion bottles, candle holder with a lit candle, and dried plants. There is a watercolor of a whiskey on the rocks and potion bottle on the bottom right and text that reads, "The Apothecaire's Apprentice. First two stretch goals unlocked: - PDF of 8 Potion cocktails and mocktails inspired by potions in the game - Apothecaire postcard by @ghostcandle"

It's a little over two days after the launch of the Kickstarter for The Apothecaire's Apprentice, and we've already reached 166% of the funding goal! I'm in absolute awe of the love this game has received so far. We've already smashed through two of the stretch goals I had planned for the game's backers: a PDF of 8 cocktails and mocktails inspired by 8 of the potions in the game, and special postcards designed by the game's main artist, Natalie (@GhostCandle)!

A little bit about our cocktail designer, Hyuge: she loves making drinks that take a bit of effort and thought to create and enjoys the complexity of drinks that require more than three ingredients to make. There is nothing better than seeing the smile on people's faces when they are handed a drink in a fun color or a decorative glass, and they get that sparkle in their eye because the flavor is even better than what they hoped for.

Natalie, meanwhile, is working on whipping up a beautiful new custom postcard design for the game's backers inspired by classic notice boards or signs for apothecaries! I'll be sharing their sketches, as well as updates to the custom potion bottle dice RuneFable is making for the game, in a future update!

At €3k, there will be a paper quality upgrade to the physical copies of the game! We're only €172 away from that goal at the time I'm writing this, but who knows? My expectations continue to be blown away each and every time. Thank you all so much for being truly inspiring.

That's all from me for now. Happy brewing!
